The Greatest Premier League Moment

Posted by on Monday, May 14, 2012 Under: Football
Excuse the pun, but a moment like yesterday comes around once in a blue moon. Sergio Aguero’s late winner at the Etihad Stadium against QPR to give them the title is certainly the greatest ever moment in Premier League history, and will go down as one of the best moments in English football.

There’s an old saying in football, ‘that game had everything’, never a true word could be said about City’s title winning match, it had every emotion under the sun, joy, despair, anger, anxiety and pure and utter adulation in the closing minutes. Unless you’re a Manchester United fan, you can’t help but be moved by the moments following Aguero’s goal.

I’m sure most football fans can relate to the highs and the lows of the sport but that goal was on another spectrum to the average supporters high. It’s lucky that the chance fell to the Argentinean, because even with all of City’s talent, I don’t think anyone else would have had the composure or talent to take a touch and then finish under so much pressure, his father-in-law would have been proud of that goal himself.

City have now set the precedent for the future, from now on the demand of the fans will grow and the character of the players will be tested. No team is invincible and you can bet your life that close  rivals Manchester United will come back stronger to challenge for the title, and to those who say they have bought the title, well we said that about Chelsea in the early Abramovic era, we just don’t know what’s around the corner in football, that’s why we love it.

As for the fans, well they deserve it after following their team through thick and thin and no doubt they will go on to see more victories both domestically and in Europe, unfortunately, there’s some bad news...I strongly believe the fans will never feel a sense of euphoria to what they felt yesterday. Moments of pure emotion like that don’t come around very often, ask any Arsenal fan if they’ve seen anything better than Michael Thomas scoring at Anfield in 1989, or ask a Liverpool fan if they’ve witnessed similar scenes to Jerzy Dudek saving Andriy Shevchenko’s penalty in the 2005 European Cup final. Both of those teams have won trophies since those events, but it’s snapshots of pivotal moments in history that fans never forget and Man City fans (or any other football fan for that matter) will never forget the 13th May 2012 and they would be hard pressed to see anything like it ever again, well, until the next blue moon comes around anyway.
